Polls: Majority for quick new elections

A new Bundestag will be elected next year – the only question is: when exactly? If the citizens have their way, it should happen as soon as possible.

After the breakup of the traffic light coalition, Germans want to vote sooner rather than later. In a survey by Infratest-Dimap for the ARD Deutschlandtrend on Thursday, 65 percent were in favor of a new Bundestag election as quickly as possible. Only 33 percent consider a date in March – as Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is aiming for – to be a better solution.

A recent survey by the Elections Research Group for ZDF provided similar results: 30 percent were in favor of March, but 54 percent were in favor of an earlier date.

If the Bundestag were to be re-elected now, the Union could expect 34 percent of the votes, according to Infratest-Dimap. 18 percent would vote for the AfD and 16 percent for the SPD. The Greens would have 12 percent and the BSW would have 6 percent. With a vote share of 5 percent, the FDP would have to worry about returning to the Bundestag.

According to this survey, 59 percent of German citizens welcome the end of the traffic lights. 40 percent blame the FDP for the failure. 26 percent see the Greens as to blame, only 19 percent blame the SPD. In the elections research group, a relative majority of 31 percent also sees the Free Democrats as being primarily to blame, but only 15 percent see the Greens and 10 percent the SPD.
