Merz: Europe can impress Trump

Donald Trump impresses strength and also contradiction, says the Union’s candidate for chancellor. This is how Europe must present itself in the USA.
Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz is calling for European countries to take a strong stand against US President-elect Donald Trump. Europe must speak with one voice, “that will make an impression in America,” said the CDU politician on Maybrit Illner’s ZDF talk show. “Donald Trump does not impress weakness, but only strength, including contradiction.” In this way, Europe can get along with the new government in the USA.
At the same time, Germany also needs to do more for its own security. The business model of importing cheaply, exporting expensively and letting the USA pay for security “is now over,” said Merz. “But that’s not that tragic. We have to prepare for it and we have to deal with it and draw the consequences from it.”
