Olaf Scholz in Budapest – powerless among herbivores
Copy the current link
Olaf Scholz was supposed to present Germany as a leading power at the European summit. But the Chancellor is ailing. Someone else takes over his role.
The circumstances have been reversed. This is shown in a small scene on Friday morning in front of the Puskás Arena in Budapest. Here Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, visibly inspired by his own importance, welcomes the German Chancellor to the informal meeting of European heads of state and government, to which he has invited people to the football stadium in the Hungarian capital. His country currently holds the presidency of the EU.
Scholz hesitates for a moment, he is still carrying a briefcase, he doesn’t want to seem like a subordinate office worker and file eater next to Orbán. But there is no one who can take the bag from him. So Scholz puts them on the floor, where an employee takes them away shortly afterwards.
