The deadline set by the USA for improving the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is soon expiring. Now experts are warning of a famine. There were only days left to take countermeasures.
International food security experts believe an “imminent famine” in the embattled north of the Gaza Strip is very likely. “All actors who are directly involved in the conflict or have an influence on its course must act immediately, within days and not just a few weeks, to avert this catastrophic situation,” wrote the independent experts from the IPC Initiative for the Analysis of food crises based in Rome in an unusually urgent call.
The warning comes shortly before the end of a 30-day deadline set by the United States on October 13th within which Israel must improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. Otherwise, US military aid could be restricted. On Monday, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller acknowledged that Israel had taken important steps to increase humanitarian aid. However, more is needed to alleviate the distress.
