After a few days of bickering, the date for the federal election is set. Now the Chancellor must act first, then the Federal President.
After agreeing on February 23rd next year as the date of the early federal election, it is now the Chancellor’s turn.
– Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) submits a motion in the Bundestag to express confidence in him – in the expectation that the opposite will happen.
– The Bundestag decides on this application 48 hours later.
– According to Article 68 of the Basic Law, the Chancellor proposes to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to dissolve the Bundestag.
– Steinmeier now has 21 days to dissolve the Bundestag. He is not obliged to do this.
– If the Federal President dissolves the Bundestag, he also sets the date for the new election. According to Article 39 of the Basic Law, this must take place within 60 days of the dissolution of the Bundestag.
– The Federal President usually follows the Federal Government’s recommendation for the election date.
