Whatsapp chats, angry members, demands to swap candidates. There is growing fear in the SPD that Olaf Scholz will lose the election. The calls for Boris Pistorius are getting louder.
Boris Pistorius is breathing down Olaf Scholz’s neck. Literally. When the Chancellor makes his government statement on Wednesday lunchtime, his Defense Minister will sit on the government bench behind him, just an arm’s length from the Chancellor’s chair.
But also in a figurative sense, Scholz can feel his party friend’s breath on his neck. The 64-year-old Pistorius is still sitting in the second row. But there are increasing voices in the party demanding that he step forward and become the candidate for chancellor instead of the chancellor. Scholz’s minister has become a competitor for the Chancellor – now that everything is at stake in the race for the next government.
