The date for the federal election has been set. Chancellor Olaf Scholz makes a government statement – and could open the election campaign in the Bundestag.
One week after the end of the traffic light coalition, Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a government statement on the current situation in the Bundestag on Wednesday (1 p.m.). In doing so, the SPD politician is practically initiating the election campaign, because not only opposition leader Friedrich Merz (CDU) will react to Scholz, but also CSU chairman Markus Söder, who does not have a Bundestag mandate but is taking part in the plenary session as a representative of the Bundesrat.
Contrary to the opposition’s original demands, the vote on the Chancellor’s vote of confidence will not be held at this meeting. After consultations between the SPD and the Union, this should now only happen on December 16th in order to clear the way for a new election on February 23rd. Since the FDP is no longer part of the coalition, the Chancellor no longer has a majority in the Bundestag.
