The USA confirms that North Korea’s soldiers are supporting Russia in pushing Ukrainian soldiers out of their country in the border area near Kursk.
According to the US State Department, North Korean soldiers are now taking part in “combat operations” near the Ukrainian border alongside Russian soldiers. Most of the more than 10,000 soldiers from North Korea sent to eastern Russia have been relocated to the Russian border region of Kursk, Foreign Office spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters on Tuesday. There the North Korean soldiers “began to take part in combat operations with the Russian armed forces.”
Already losses among North Korea’s soldiers
A week ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that North Korean soldiers had already taken part in fighting against the Ukrainian army in the Kursk region. 11,000 soldiers from North Korea are currently in Kursk to support the Kremlin troops; there have already been losses, Zelensky said. The Kremlin in Moscow has so far avoided questions about the presence of North Korean soldiers.
Russia and North Korea have further deepened their security cooperation in recent months. At the weekend, Russian President Vladimir Putin put the defense agreement with North Korea agreed in June into effect. In it, both countries commit to “immediate military assistance” if one of them is attacked.
