The coffers are tight: But there is a lot of money at stake at the World Climate Conference. The Chancellor has canceled his trip to Azerbaijan – but is now joining a call for more ambition.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), together with other industrialized countries and poorer countries particularly affected by the climate crisis, is campaigning for more ambition at the UN climate conference. “Trillions of dollars are needed. We urgently need to increase climate financing,” said a statement from the so-called High Ambition Coalition, which Scholz signed. “The climate crisis will get exponentially worse if we don’t act now.”
In the past, Scholz had been criticized because he had not signed declarations from the loose confederation of states. In addition to Germany, France, Spain, Canada and several island states and African countries are supporting the current appeal.
It continues: “Industrialized countries must lead the way and keep their financial promises.” In addition, innovative sources of financing would have to be developed.
Germany has pledged six billion euros annually for climate financing starting next year. However, there was still a gap in the funds for this in previous budget plans. Climate activists warn that Germany will lose its credibility if it does not keep its promises.
