Burkhard Garweg: Witnesses claim to have seen RAF robbers in Hamburg

According to witness statements, former RAF terrorist Burkhard Garweg, who went into hiding, is said to have been in Hamburg. Several people said they had seen the 56-year-old in the Hanseatic city at the end of October, said a spokesman for the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office. The information is “plausible and credible” – and more important than if it came from just one person. The “Bild” newspaper had previously reported.

Garweg is also said to have worked for years as a photographer or assistant to a photographer. However, this has no connection with the possible sightings; the photographer’s activity therefore dates back a long time and is assumed to extend from 2016 to the beginning of 2024.

For years, Garweg, Daniela Klette, 66, and Ernst-Volker Staub, 70, have been investigated for attempted murder and attempted and completed aggravated robbery. Between 1999 and 2016 they are said to have robbed money transporters and supermarkets, especially in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, in order to finance their underground life. However, the acts had no terrorist background.

The three belonged to the so-called third generation of the left-wing extremist Red Army Faction (RAF). The RAF, which killed more than 30 people, declared itself disbanded in 1998. Klette was arrested in Berlin in February and charges have since been brought against the 66-year-old.
