John Thune will lead Republicans in the US Senate
In the US election, the Republicans secured the majority in the Senate. Now they decided that Senator John Thune should become the powerful man in the parliamentary chamber.
After their election victory, the Republicans in the US Senate elected John Thune as the future majority leader of the parliamentary chamber. This is what several US media outlets reported unanimously about the vote for the top post, in which Senators John Cornyn and Rick Scott were unable to secure a majority.
The 63-year-old Thune has been in the Senate for the state of South Dakota for almost 20 years. There he is part of his party’s leadership circle.
John Thune criticized Trump at times
In the US election last week, the Republicans secured a majority in the Senate. The Democrats will still be in charge in the chamber until January, with Republican Mitch McConnell as his party’s minority leader. At the beginning of the year he announced that he would give up his top office.
Thune became involved in politics early on. In 1997 he became a member of the House of Representatives and in 2005 he was elected senator. Thune initially criticized Trump for his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, in which Trump lost to Democrat Joe Biden. But he quickly fell back in line behind Trump. In the spring he voted for billions in aid for Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia.
