Union: Finance Minister should withdraw supplementary budget

Does the federal government need more money this year? The finance minister says: Probably not necessarily. Nevertheless, parliamentarians are leaving the option open in case of an emergency.
The Union has called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s minority government to forego the supplementary budget that was actually planned for this year. “Withdraw this motion,” demanded Union budget officer Christian Haase in the Bundestag. The new Finance Minister Jörg Kukies (SPD) himself says that the draft is not needed and that it was calculated unconstitutionally.
Kukies had previously explained that, as things stand, no budget freezes were necessary even without subsequent loans. “The federal government pays its bills,” he emphasized. Nobody needs to worry that child benefit, Bafög or citizen’s benefit won’t arrive.
The supplementary budget should fully exploit the scope for borrowing. The additional billions borrowed should also ensure that the federal government conserves its reserves this year – and then has more money next year. After the traffic light broke, it is now unlikely that this will succeed. However, the members of the Bundestag still left the option of subsequent borrowing open: they transferred the supplementary budget back to the responsible committee.
