It is a very special encounter: Joe Biden welcomes his predecessor, successor and arch-rival Donald Trump in the White House. He has a lot of questions.
US President Joe Biden and his designated successor Donald Trump spoke to each other for around two hours at their meeting in the White House, according to government headquarters. Biden’s chief of staff Jeff Zients and Trump’s new chief of staff Susie Wiles also took part in the conversation.
“Important national security and domestic policy issues” were discussed, said White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre. Trump was “friendly” and asked “a whole series of detailed questions.”
Biden’s security adviser Jake Sullivan said the conversation also discussed Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Biden made it clear that it was in the US’s interest to continue supporting Ukraine. A “strong Europe, a stable Europe that stands its ground against aggressors and repels their aggression” is of great importance, also to ensure that the USA is not drawn directly into a war, as was the case twice in the 20th century .
