Bundestag in standby mode – AfD, BSW and Left protest

Not much happens in the Bundestag after the traffic lights went out. The agenda is shrinking, decisions are no longer made due to unclear majorities. There will probably even be a break in the meeting.

After the traffic lights went out with the majority in the Bundestag now unclear, the program in parliament will be further cut back. The entire next week of meetings from November 25th to 29th will probably be cancelled. According to information from the German Press Agency, when the Council of Elders discussed the issue, only the AfD, BSW and the Left spoke out against such a step. According to a spokeswoman for the SPD parliamentary group, the deletion of the meeting week will be debated and voted on in a rules of procedure debate on Friday.

Representatives of the AfD, BSW and the Left criticized the project sharply. “We are government controllers and want the week of meetings set out in the meeting calendar to be used,” said the First Parliamentary Managing Director of the Die Linke group, Christian Görke, to the dpa. He referred to the rights of the opposition, for example to question the government or for parliamentary initiatives. “The fact that a very large coalition is refusing to do parliamentary work and negating the rights of the other parts of the opposition is going too far!” He spoke of a “coalition of irresponsibility.”

The parliamentary managing director of the AfD parliamentary group, Stephan Brandner, said: “This is the classic behavior of a political cartel.” In his opinion, the week could have been used to make decisions. He mentioned topics that are important to the AfD, such as nuclear energy, border security and immigration law. When asked, a spokeswoman for the BSW Bundestag group said: “It is clear that a normal budget week cannot take place, but the Bundestag is able to work and the session week should take place.”

The coming week of the meeting was actually planned for budget discussions. In such weeks, other topics are usually not on the agenda. But now there is no budget, said Görke, referring to the traffic light break. But there are problems in the country and in such a situation Parliament takes a break. “That doesn’t work!”
