Federal party conference: Greens are reorganizing themselves

The Greens have a lot of plans: elect a new board, choose the candidate for chancellor – and they will probably also have a heated discussion about migration.
A good three months before the early federal election, the Greens want to reposition themselves at a federal party conference. At the meeting in Wiesbaden on Sunday, Robert Habeck will be nominated as candidate for chancellor for the election on February 23rd. Or in the words of the corresponding application: “as a candidate for the people of Germany”.
Not explicitly a candidate for chancellor, but in the end it is
Habeck had already avoided the word “candidate for chancellor” in his application video from last week. It does not appear in the Federal Executive Board’s application either. But what is meant becomes clear: “Robert Habeck has what it takes to be a good Chancellor,” it is said. But he should get there “in a top duo with Annalena Baerbock”. With survey results of just 11 to 12 percent, you probably don’t want to put it any more clearly.
Today, Omid Nouripour will be voted out as party leader and Emily Büning as Federal Political Director. Co-party leader Ricarda Lang will be farewelled on Saturday. Then the new federal executive board should also be elected. Franziska Brantner and Felix Banaszak, who have no serious competition, are the new party leaders.
This evening there will be a debate on the current situation, which will also focus on the collapse of the traffic light coalition with the SPD and FDP last week. Controversial debates are expected, particularly on the subject of migration: The Green Youth wants to achieve a rejection of further restrictions.
Fridays for Future warns the Greens
The Fridays for Future movement demands a clear commitment to climate protection from delegates. “At the Federal Delegates Conference, the party must make a clear decision – climate protection makes no compromises. Real climate protection can only be achieved with a stop to all new gas infrastructure, climate money, without new highways!” said Carla Reemtsma from the German Press Agency organization in Berlin .
In the past three years of government responsibility, the Greens have “again decided against the future of young people”, for example in the construction of liquid gas terminals, the construction of new motorways and “the destruction of the village of Lützerath for dirty lignite”.
829 delegates and replacement delegates are expected. According to the party, there are more than 3,700 registrations from guests from politics, business, trade unions, civil society and diplomacy. It is the 50th regular federal delegate conference of the Greens since the merger with Alliance 90 in 1993. Small party congresses or state councils, as they are called by the Greens, are not included.
