Area code in Poland: Foreign Minister against Mayor

Poland will elect a new president in May. Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s party now wants to use a primary election to decide who to send into the race. Two politicians are interested in the office.

In Poland, Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s liberal-conservative citizens’ coalition wants to use a primary election to determine its candidate for the presidential election in May 2025. The organizing committee announced that members could cast their vote via a secure SMS on November 22nd, and the result would be available on November 23rd.

Two prominent politicians from the citizens’ coalition are running: Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski. The exact date of the presidential election has not yet been determined.

Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski

In view of the Russian war of aggression against Poland’s neighboring country Ukraine, many observers currently see the 61-year-old Sikorski on the rise. The convinced transatlanticist is well connected internationally. He is vehemently in favor of supporting Ukraine. Sikorski was Poland’s chief diplomat from 2007 to 2014, and before that defense minister. He is married to the historian and journalist Anne Applebaum, who was recently awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in Frankfurt.

While Sikorski is said to have a certain arrogance, Trzaskowski, as the mayor of Warsaw, scores points for being more close to the citizens.

Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski

The 52-year-old Trzaskowski is committed to the rights of the LGBTQ community and had crucifixes banned in Warsaw’s offices. This makes him popular with younger and progressive Poles, but he is a red flag for Catholic-conservative voters. Trzaskowski achieved a respectable success in the 2020 presidential election: At that time, he was only narrowly defeated by the incumbent Andrzej Duda in the runoff election.

President Andrzej Duda of the PiS cannot run again

Duda, who comes from the ranks of the national conservative PiS, will not be allowed to run again in the coming election after two terms in office. The PiS is also currently looking for a suitable presidential candidate within its ranks.
