Xi: China wants to maintain “stable relationship” with US

Biden and Xi meet on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Peru. It is likely to be Biden’s last meeting as president with China’s head of state. A new administration under Trump will follow in January.

China’s head of state Xi Jinping made it clear at a meeting with US President Joe Biden that he would continue to strive for a “stable relationship” with the USA. China is ready to work with the new US administration under Donald Trump, Xi said, according to the press present, at the start of the meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru. It’s about maintaining communication between the two superpowers, expanding cooperation and managing differences.

Outgoing President Biden and Xi met in person for the first time in a year. The relationship between the world’s two largest economies has long been tense. The meeting will be overshadowed by Trump, who will replace Biden in office in January. The Republican has announced far-reaching new tariffs on goods from China.

Trump had already taken a tough course towards China during his first term in office from 2017 to 2021 and introduced large-scale punitive tariffs on goods from the country, which his successor Biden later maintained. China responded with some countermeasures such as export controls on important raw materials, but according to observers it will now be better prepared if Trump makes good on his election promise.
