Sarah McBride, the first trans woman in the US Congress, is a milestone for the American trans community. But some Republicans see the arrival of their new colleague as a problem.
Even before Sarah McBride becomes the first trans woman to enter the US Congress, a Republican representative wants to ban her from using women’s restrooms. Members of Congress and employees should only be allowed to use restrooms and locker rooms according to their “biological sex,” according to a resolution proposed by Republican Rep. Nancy Mace.
McBride criticized Mace’s move as a blatant attempt by “right-wing extremists” to distract from the fact that they have no solution to America’s problems. Congress should work on making rents and health care cheaper instead of starting “culture wars.”
Sarah McBride is the first trans MP
McBride, 34, a Democrat, was elected to the House of Representatives in the state of Delaware, where Republicans retained a narrow majority.
The Republican speaker of the House of Representatives said, among other things, about the McBride controversy: “A man is a man, a woman is a woman – and a man cannot become a woman.” At the same time, everyone wants to be treated with dignity.
Among other things, Donald Trump made criticism of the participation of trans women in sporting events a campaign issue. He also announced that there would no longer be any financial support from the state for gender reassignment operations.
