In Lebanon, there is some optimism – albeit cautious – about a possible ceasefire. The Hezbollah leader makes it clear: Negotiations are ongoing, but the fight continues.
The Lebanese Hezbollah militia has examined and made comments on the US proposal for a ceasefire with Israel, according to its leader Naim Kassim. However, Hezbollah will not agree to a ceasefire that violates Lebanon’s sovereignty, Kassim said in a televised speech.
He was referring to a contentious point reportedly contained in the current draft that explicitly grants Israel a right to self-defense.
Kassim confirmed that ceasefire negotiations were underway, but made it clear that the militia would not suspend its attacks during ongoing talks. “We will stay in the field no matter what the cost,” Kassim said. The success of the negotiations now depends on Israel’s response and on the “seriousness” of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
It is unclear where Kassim is. He has given several speeches since the killing of his predecessor Hassan Nasrallah in late September and was named Hezbollah’s new leader three weeks ago.
