Man gains weight to avoid military service

Conscription is compulsory in South Korea – there are only rare exceptions. A 26-year-old wanted to use a trick to avoid having to use a weapon. Now he’s in trouble.
A young South Korean tried to avoid military service using a rather unusual method. citing local media. Accordingly, a 26-year-old ended up in court. He began eating before his medical examination for draft, a judge in the capital Seoul said. He was classified as obese, which allowed him to serve in a government agency in a non-combat capacity.
The defendant intentionally gained weight by doubling his daily food intake and drinking a large amount of water shortly before the medical examination for military enlistment. He followed a program drawn up by a friend, who encouraged him with concrete plans to gain weight.

According to the “Korea Herald”, he was found fit during the muster, but during the medical examination for enlistment he weighed 102 kilograms at a height of 1.69 meters – and was therefore very overweight. This prevented him from serving in a combat unit, but instead gave him an office job that he could commute to from home instead of being stationed in a barracks.

In South Korea, anyone who evades military service without a justifiable reason can be punished with up to three years in prison. The court sentenced the overweight man to a one-year suspended prison sentence, and the friend who hatched the plan to six months probation.

According to the South Korean newspaper, the court said it had decided on a relatively lenient sentence for the defendant and his friend because they had no criminal record and the defendant had admitted his wrongdoing and vowed to sincerely fulfill his military duty.
