The place that would change everything for them forever is gray, hard and up and down. There is rubble all around, it is dusty. From far away you can hear the wheels rolling across the concrete and you can hear children’s laughter. A skate park like there is in every small town in Germany, but here in the village of Janwaar in northern India the park is a very different world – especially for the girls.
Asha Gond, now 25, is one of them. She is Adivasi, i.e. without caste, and therefore belongs to the lowest edge of society. “If the skateboard hadn’t come into my life, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” she says, “and I wouldn’t be who I am today.”
