The fighting around the Syrian metropolis of Aleppo represents a new escalation in the war in Syria. The front lines were relatively stable for a long time. Now Russia is intervening again.
The Russian air force has continued its attacks on rebels in northwest Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said there were attacks in the provinces of Idlib and Hama as well as in Aleppo during the night and early Sunday. At least one civilian is said to have been killed and several others were injured. The UK-based Observatory sources its information from a network of informants on the ground in Syria.
Since the middle of the week, rebels led by the Islamist Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) have been able to retake larger areas in northwestern Syria. On Saturday, rebels advanced deep into the megacity of Aleppo. Syria’s ruler Bashar al-Assad announced a counteroffensive.
The fighting in the northwest represents a new escalation in the civil war after years of stalemate. A devastating war has been raging in Syria since 2011. The Syrian government recently controlled around two-thirds of the country with the help of its allies Russia and Iran.
