Activists: Dead after Russian airstrikes on Aleppo

Russia is one of the Syrian government’s most important allies. After the capture of the city of Aleppo by an Islamist-led alliance, Moscow is again carrying out air strikes in Syria.

According to activists, twelve people were killed in Russian air strikes on Aleppo. Russia’s air force bombed targets in front of a clinic in the center of the city, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. In addition to members of the Islamist group Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), eight civilians were among the fatalities. The activists said 23 people were injured. They get their information from a network of informants in Syria.

An alliance led by HTS had previously succeeded in pushing Syrian government troops out of Aleppo in a very short time and taking control of the city over the weekend. Syria’s ruler Bashar al-Assad announced a counteroffensive.

Moscow is one of the Syrian government’s most important allies in the civil war. At the weekend, Russia’s air force attacked Aleppo for the first time since 2016. There were also Russian air strikes against Syrian rebels elsewhere in northwestern Syria.
