Trump brings convicted former adviser back to the White House
Peter Navarro is an old acquaintance of Donald Trump, has proven to be extremely loyal and even accepted a short prison sentence. The loyal following pays off for him.
US President-elect Donald Trump wants to bring his former economic advisor, convicted criminal Peter Navarro, back into the White House. Trump announced in a written statement that Navarro would become an adviser on trade and industry in his second term. The 75-year-old is an advocate of isolationist economic policy.
Trump enthused that Navarro did an excellent job as an economic advisor in his first term. However, he was treated terribly by the “deep state”.
Trump was alluding to the prosecution against Navarro. He had to serve a four-month prison sentence in March for contempt of the US Congress. Navarro had refused to release documents and testify before a House of Representatives committee investigating the storming of the US Capitol by Trump supporters.
Not the only Trump confidant behind bars
Navarro was the first close Trump confidant to serve a prison sentence in this context. The same fate befell Trump’s former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, who was also put behind bars for several months.
Trump’s supporters stormed the parliament building on January 6, 2021. At that time, Congress formally confirmed Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election. Trump incited his supporters during a speech that he had been deprived of his election victory through massive fraud. To this day, the Republican does not recognize his defeat.
A House committee investigated the storming of the Capitol and asked several Trump confidants to cooperate, but Navarro and Bannon refused.
