Is it conceivable that the Bundeswehr could be used to ensure peace in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire? The CDU leader rejects such considerations.
Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz has sharply criticized Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s idea of using the Bundeswehr to secure peace in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. The CDU leader said on the ARD program “Maischberger” that he considers such speculation to be irresponsible at this point in time.
“Nobody is asking this question at the moment,” emphasized Merz. The war in Ukraine is ongoing and Russia continues to act brutally against the civilian population. “We are all struggling with the question of how to end this war.” The question is how this can be achieved.
On Tuesday, on the sidelines of a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Baerbock (Greens) said without being asked that various elements of peace in Ukraine were on the table. When asked about a possible German role in this, she said that the German side would of course support everything that would serve peace in the future with all its might. She did not rule out the involvement of the Bundeswehr.
