While the Islamist rebel alliance Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) advances from the north of Syria, local opposition groups take control in the south. Now in a symbolic region.
According to activists, insurgents have taken control of large parts of the symbolic Daraa governorate in southern Syria. Local opposition groups have taken control of around 80 percent of the region, reported the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Government security forces had previously left posts and bases, reported the Observatory, which tracks the war in the country with a network of informants. The insurgents therefore called on members of the Syrian armed forces to defect.
The first protests in Syria before the start of the civil war took place in the city of Daraa in March 2011. They were triggered by the arrest of young people who had written anti-government graffiti on walls.
Major territorial losses for government
On Friday evening, the Syrian Observatory had previously reported that the government had also lost control of the southwest Syrian city of Suwaida in the Suwaida governorate bordering Daraa. Local insurgents have taken control of the central prison. The governor fled.
On November 27th, the civil war suddenly flared up again with the offensive of the Islamist alliance Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). In a very short time, the group took over a lot of territory, sometimes without a fight. Their goal is to overthrow the government.
