South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has asked for forgiveness from his citizens for declaring martial law at short notice. He did not announce his resignation.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol defied strong pressure, including from within his ruling party. “I am very sorry and I would like to sincerely apologize to the people who were shocked,” Yoon said in a televised address to the nation on Saturday (local time) as he bowed. “I leave it to my party to take measures to stabilize the political situation in the future, including the issue of my term of office.”
The speech was the head of state’s first public appearance since he withdrew the martial law order early Wednesday, just six hours after it was announced. Parliament voted against the decree.
Impeachment in South Korea
Han Dong Hoon, chairman of Yoon’s People Power Party (PPP), said after the speech that the president was no longer able to carry out public duties and his resignation was now inevitable. Han will meet Prime Minister Han Duck Soo this Saturday, local news agency Yonhap News reported. Under the constitution, the prime minister appointed by Yoon becomes interim president in the event of resignation or impeachment.
MPs will vote later Saturday on the opposition party’s motion to impeach Yoon.
