It is the second yes to an unusual three-party alliance: the Thuringian BSW agrees to a coalition with the CDU and SPD. Now the SPD still has to decide – and a prime minister has to be elected.
The Sahra Wagenknecht alliance has agreed to a government contract with the CDU and SPD in Thuringia, thereby giving the green light for the country’s first blackberry coalition. At a general meeting in Ilmenau, 76 of the BSW members entitled to vote voted for the contract, 26 voted against it, and two abstained. The approval of the SPD base is still missing; the Social Democrats have until Monday lunchtime to make a membership decision. The CDU has already approved the contract.
Before the vote, Thuringia’s BSW boss Katja Wolf sounded conciliatory tones towards party founder Sahra Wagenknecht. “We are two strong women who are so close in terms of content,” said Wolf.
She announced that the BSW would be a “strong voice in Thuringia against an ever-stronger war logic” and bring in an East German perspective. “We want to translate what is discussed at the dinner table into concrete policy.”
The desired blackberry alliance has 44 of the 88 seats in the Thuringian state parliament and therefore does not have its own majority. There would be a stalemate with the Left and the AfD in opposition. Thuringia’s CDU leader Mario Voigt wants to be elected as the new Prime Minister on Thursday.
The BSW and SPD in Brandenburg had already set the course for a coalition on Friday. Dietmar Woidke (SPD) is to be elected as head of government on Wednesday.
