Just over a month after winning the election, Donald Trump makes his first trip abroad. He also uses his visit to the Notre Dame reopening for other appointments.
A few weeks before his inauguration, US President-elect Donald Trump is visiting Paris. French President Emmanuel Macron received the Republican at the Élysée Palace for bilateral talks. The two shook hands several times when greeting each other, hugged each other and posed for photos.
He told Macron that he was very happy to have Trump as a guest in Paris. Trump praised the relationship with France in his first years in office. “We had a good time together, and we had a lot of success, really great success,” the Republican said. “It seems like the world is going a little crazy at the moment, and we’ll talk about that,” he added – probably alluding to current international crises.
In the evening, Trump wants to take part in the ceremonial reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral at Macron’s invitation. Following the meeting with Trump, Macron will also welcome Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Élysée Palace, according to the French government. It was initially unclear whether Trump could also sit down with Zelensky – or the three of them together.
Trump also plans to meet with the heir to the British throne, Prince William, in Paris. It was unclear whether Trump could use the visit to France for separate talks with other visiting heads of state and government.
It is his first trip abroad since winning the US presidential election in early November. On January 20th, Trump will be sworn in as president and will then take over from Democrat Joe Biden. The visit to Paris comes in the middle of a domestic political crisis in France.
