On January 20th, Donald Trump will be sworn in as the new US President. He makes it clear in advance that he has no intention of getting involved in the war in Syria.
US President-elect Donald Trump does not want the United States to become involved in the crisis in Syria in any way. Syria is in big trouble, but the country is not a friend of the USA, “and the United States should have nothing to do with it,” said the Republican on the X and Truth Social platforms. “This is not our fight,” he wrote in all caps. The USA should therefore not get involved.
The situation in Syria is currently deteriorating dramatically. According to activists, Syrian rebels have surrounded places in the area surrounding the capital Damascus. While the government troops say they are “repositioning themselves”, the insurgents are also making further territorial gains in the south of the country and on the border with Israel. Syrian head of state Bashar al-Assad is coming under increasing pressure.
Referring to current developments, Trump wrote: “Russia, so heavily tied up in Ukraine and having lost over 600,000 soldiers there, does not appear to be able to stop this literal march through Syria – a country that has been there for years protected.” The Russians, like Assad himself, would now be forced out of the country. “And that might actually be the best thing that could happen to them,” he argued. “There was never much to gain for Russia in Syria.”
Last week, the civil war in Syria flared up again with a rebel offensive led by the Islamist group Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). In a very short time, the group took over many areas in the northwest of the country, some of them without a fight. The aim of the insurgents is to overthrow the government. The conflict began in 2011 with protests against Assad’s government.
