Rebels: Syrian city of Homs completely captured

After Aleppo, another city of millions is now falling to the rebel alliance in Syria. Homs is strategically of great importance.

According to their own statements, the rebels in Syria have taken complete control of the large city of Homs. This was announced by a spokesman for the rebel alliance led by the Islamist group Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had previously reported that government troops had withdrawn from Homs. Syrian military circles said the armed forces were repositioning themselves around the city.

Syria’s third largest city lies between Aleppo in the north and the capital Damascus in the south. It is also in a strategically important position between the coastal strongholds of President Bashar al-Assad’s government and Damascus. The rebel offensive is now likely to be directed at the capital.
