Relations between the government of deposed Syrian leader Assad and the Palestinians were rather frosty. Palestinian President Abbas is now emphasizing solidarity with the Syrian people.
After the fall of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas spoke out in favor of preserving Syria’s territorial unity. “We reiterate the need to respect the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic,” said a statement from his office in the West Bank’s Ramallah, carried by the official Wafa news agency. “The State of Palestine and its people stand with the brotherly Syrian people,” Abbas added.
The Assad government was rather hostile to Palestinian groups, especially the Islamists. Hundreds of Palestinians were imprisoned in Syria under Assad’s rule.
Abbas stressed that it is now important for all political forces to prioritize the interests of the Syrian people in order to restore Syria’s important role in the region. This also benefits the “interests of the Palestinian people and their just pursuit of freedom and independence,” explained the 89-year-old.
