A selfie with Angela Merkel made refugee Anas Modamani from Syria famous in 2015. Dem star He tells us how he now experienced the liberation of his homeland.
It was one of the photos from the refugee summer of 2015: the Chancellor and the selfie with Anas Modamani. The young Syrian fled to Germany to escape dictator Bashar al-Assad. In August, Angela Merkel visited his refugee accommodation in Berlin-Spandau. Modamani spontaneously asked her for a selfie, a press photographer captured the scene, the photo went viral – and made the Syrian famous.
But the attention also had its downsides. After the attacks in Brussels in 2016, right-wing extremists spread on Facebook that Modamani was one of the attackers. He sued Facebook, demanding the images be deleted, but was unsuccessful.
