Kim Yong Hyun is considered a possible mastermind behind the temporarily declared martial law in South Korea. Now he’s talking about taking full responsibility for the situation.
Amid the worsening state crisis in South Korea, former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun has promised to take sole responsibility. “The entire responsibility for the situation lies solely with me. My subordinates simply faithfully followed my orders and the assignments given to them. I ask for leniency for them,” South Korea’s Yonhap news agency quoted a statement from Kim’s lawyer as saying. In it, President Yoon’s close ally also waived his right to have the arrest warrant issued against him for alleged treason reviewed in a hearing.
The politician did not explicitly state whether Kim would also like to take sole responsibility for temporarily imposing martial law. The government camp may also want to present Kim as a scapegoat to the public in order to reduce President Yoon Suk Yeol’s responsibility.
He completely unexpectedly imposed martial law on his country on Tuesday and lifted it again hours later after massive political resistance. On Saturday evening, an opposition motion to impeach Yoon failed in parliament. But public pressure against the 63-year-old continues.
