Israel’s army withdraws from Chiam in southern Lebanon
Israel’s ground troops are to gradually withdraw from Lebanon within 60 days under the ceasefire agreement. Soldiers have now left a place there that was hotly contested for a long time.
Israel’s army says it has withdrawn from the town of Chiam in southern Lebanon. The military said the Israeli forces had completed their mission there. In accordance with the ceasefire agreement, soldiers from the Lebanese army and the UN peacekeeping force Unifil would now take up positions there.
Israel and Hezbollah only agreed to a ceasefire at the end of November. Israel’s ground troops are to gradually withdraw from Lebanon within 60 days.
Initially, Israel’s army will remain stationed in several areas in southern Lebanon, the military said in a statement. According to its own statements, the army is still taking action against threats there within the framework of the agreement. There are also occasional fatal attacks.
There had been heavy fighting between Israeli soldiers and Hezbollah fighters in Chiam before the ceasefire began.
