The Chancellor has received a lot of criticism for his call to Russia’s President. He still thinks the step was right – and wants to repeat it.
Despite the fruitless phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is ready for further talks with him. “It was frustrating,” said the Chancellor in the annual review of the broadcaster RTL, “because he simply told all of his formulas again.”
Nevertheless, the phone call was necessary to make it clear to Putin that he could not hope that German support for the attacked Ukraine would weaken and to ask him “that he must also withdraw troops so that the basis for peace development can be created.” , explained Scholz. “And that has to be done, and I will do it again. But you can’t have any illusions about it.”
Scholz called Putin on his own initiative in mid-November – the first time since December 2022. This sparked criticism in Russia’s EU neighbors. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj accused Scholz of opening “Pandora’s Box” with the call.
