Women are not allowed to sing in public in the Islamic Republic of Iran. A singer does this anyway and is celebrated for it. It doesn’t take long for the justice system to react.

A well-known singer in Iran caused a stir online with a banned live performance. On Wednesday, Parastu Ahmadi streamed a concert with her band from a caravanserai on the video platform YouTube and thereby violated several laws in Iran: public performances by female singers are prohibited in the Islamic Republic, and Ahmadi also appeared without a headscarf and in a dress.

“I, Parastu, am a girl who wants to sing for the people I love. This is a right that I cannot close my eyes to,” said a text that appeared before the start of the performance. Her almost half-hour concert was interpreted online as a courageous performance.

Iran’s judiciary opened proceedings against the singer and her producer on Thursday. The concert took place “without complying with legal and religious regulations,” according to the Misan justice portal. Appropriate measures had been taken.

In recent years, many Iranian women’s protests against strict Islamic laws have intensified. In the fall of 2022, masses took to the streets against repressive policies under the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom,” but the demonstrations were violently suppressed.

Conservative MPs want to take action against civil disobedience with a criminal reform of the headscarf requirement, which provides for draconian penalties for violations. Many women in major cities are now resisting Islamic dress codes as a sign of protest and self-determination.
