Four prime ministers in just one year: France’s political situation is complicated. Macron’s confidant Bayrou should now take care of it. But the challenges are great.
France’s new Prime Minister François Bayrou has emphasized the country’s complicated situation. “Nobody knows more than me how difficult the situation is,” he said, referring to France’s high debt and the budget dispute that led to the fall of the previous government. It is a “Himalayan mountain range” of all kinds of difficulties.
In the dispute over an austerity budget, the Left Party and the right-wing Rassemblement National overthrew the previous government with the support of other opposition MPs just over a week ago. France urgently needs to tighten its belt, the EU Commission is conducting deficit proceedings against Paris due to excessive new debt.
Bayrou announced that he wanted to overcome the divisions in society and tear down “the glass wall that has been erected between citizens and power.”
The Greens and Socialists had previously spoken out several times against Macron’s confidant, who, in their view, would not bring a new beginning, but rather a continuation of previous policies. It is therefore uncertain whether Bayrou will be able to form a majority capable of governing.
