In the traffic light, implementing climate money did not work. The Greens are now making it part of their draft election manifesto. Climate protection should therefore be socially acceptable.
After a victory in the federal election, the Greens want to introduce climate money as soon as possible. “All people with low and middle incomes will receive a large part of the income from the CO2 pricing of building heat and transport back as climate money to compensate,” says the draft of the party’s election program, excerpts of which are available to the German Press Agency. The climate money should come “as quickly as possible” in the next legislative period. The “Spiegel” had previously reported. The election program is to be presented in Berlin on Tuesday.
The broken traffic light coalition made up of the SPD, Greens and FDP had already agreed on climate money in the 2021 coalition agreement to relieve consumers. At that time, however, there was no technical possibility of paying out to every individual citizen. Therefore, it was not implemented. According to earlier statements by former Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP), whose ministry at the time was supposed to find a solution for this, a per capita payment should be possible from 2025.
Socially acceptable climate protection
In the draft of their election program, the Greens emphasize the socially acceptable design of climate protection. “So that climate-friendly alternatives become affordable for everyone, we want to further expand funding programs in the future and, through social differentiation, tailor them particularly to people with low and middle incomes,” says the paper.
In return, the party also takes on debts. Investing in climate protection is a generational task that “should also be partially financed through borrowing.”
Another project mentioned in the draft program is government support for the purchase of an electric car. There should be a charging card for refueling at public charging stations, as well as tax incentives and a so-called social leasing program for electric cars.
With regard to economic policy, according to the draft program, the Greens are aiming for “permanently cheap energy” and higher private and public investments in innovation and infrastructure as well as more skilled workers. Government processes should be simplified and accelerated.
