Reports: Israel negotiator for Gaza talks in Qatar

Hopes for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and an exchange of abducted Israelis for imprisoned Palestinians have been disappointed several times. But media reports are now making people sit up and take notice.

According to media reports, an Israeli delegation has arrived in Qatar for talks on an exchange of hostages in the Gaza Strip for detained Palestinians and a ceasefire. This was reported by the newspaper “Times of Israel”, the Israeli TV station Channel 12 and Barak Ravid, a well-connected correspondent for the US news site Axios.

Qatar, together with the other mediators USA and Egypt, has been trying to end the war for months. It was triggered by the Hamas massacre in Israel on October 7, 2023, with 1,200 dead and more than 250 abducted.

The Israeli delegation included representatives of the Israeli army, the domestic intelligence service Shin Bet and the foreign intelligence service Mossad, the Times of Israel reported, citing people familiar with the matter. There was initially no official confirmation.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with the future US special envoy for hostage issues, Adam Boehler.

Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz said in parliament that an agreement with Hamas to free the 100 hostages was “closer than ever.” Similar hopes were also circulating in the Arab media. A Hamas representative expressed cautious optimism to the German Press Agency.
