ÖDP sues against the signature regulation – Karlsruhe decides

Small parties turn to the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. You feel disadvantaged in the admission process for the federal election. Is that changing now?

The Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe will publish a decision on Wednesday (9:30 a.m.) on the obligation of small parties to collect a certain number of signatures for admission to the federal election. The Ecological Democratic Party (ÖDP) turned to the court. It sees the rights to universal and equal elections and the right to equal opportunities of the parties violated (ref. 2 BvE 15/23 and 2 BvQ 73/24).

Small and new parties that do not yet have at least five members in the Bundestag or a state parliament must collect a few hundred to 2,000 signatures each for the approval of their state lists and district election proposals. The ÖDP is defending itself against this obligation in the process that began in 2023. When it became clear that the federal election would be brought forward, she also submitted an urgent application.
