In the second round of voting: Michael Kretschmer was re-elected as Prime Minister

The CDU politician Michael Kretschmer remains Prime Minister in Saxony. The 49-year-old achieved the required majority in the state parliament in Dresden in the second round of voting.

The Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) was confirmed in his office by the state parliament in the second round of voting. In the vote on Wednesday in Dresden, the 49-year-old received 69 votes and thus the majority of the votes cast, which was enough for re-election in the second round.

39 of the 120 MPs voted for the opposing candidate Matthias Berger, who stood for the Free Voters, and one MP voted for AfD parliamentary group leader Jörg Urban. A total of eleven parliamentarians abstained from the vote. Kretschmer was sworn in after the election.

Saxony: Kretschmer failed in the first round of voting

Kretschmer initially failed in the first round of voting. He missed the necessary absolute majority. Kretschmer’s CDU wants to form a minority government with the SPD. The future coalition members are ten votes short of their own majority in parliament, which is why they are dependent on support from other factions.

In the second round of voting, Kretschmer received 18 votes from outside the coalition factions. The election was secret, which is why the distribution of votes remained unclear. The Left had signaled in advance that it would support Kretschmer in the election in order to prevent a Prime Minister from the right-wing camp. In the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) there was no compulsory faction.
