After the overthrow of ruler Bashar al-Assad, Syrian White Helmets said they discovered bodies and body parts in a medicine warehouse near Damascus.
Bodies were reportedly lying in a cold room in a suburb of the capital Damascus, some apparently for more than a year and a half, White Helmet representative Ammar al-Salmo told the AFP news agency on Wednesday. There were also bones scattered across the floor.
Al-Salmo estimated the number of victims at more than 20. Some of the body bags in the cold storage room were labeled with “Aleppo-Hrajtan”, two city names in the north, and numbers. DNA tests should now be used to clarify the identity of the victims and notify their families. An AFP reporter watched as men in white protective suits loaded bodies and body parts into black bags onto a truck.
The White Helmets’ body was found near a Shiite shrine
The camp is in the southern suburb of Sajjida Seinab, a former stronghold of pro-Iranian fighters such as the Lebanese Hezbollah. There was a Shiite shrine near where the bodies were found.
Islamist fighters led by the militia Hajat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took over the Syrian capital on December 8th. The long-time ruler Assad fled to Russia. The fighters launched a surprise offensive in northwestern Syria on November 27 and advanced to the capital within a few days.
