Esken on exciting video: Scholz was “in a kind of tunnel”

The fact that Chancellor Scholz gave his party leader the cold shoulder in the Bundestag caused a lot of discussion. Now SPD leader Esken is publicly commenting on the scene for the first time.

In her own words, SPD leader Saskia Esken has forgiven Chancellor Olaf Scholz for giving her the cold shoulder in the Bundestag on Monday after his speech and the vote on the vote of confidence. “Olaf Scholz apologized to me very warmly and extensively and that’s it for me,” she said in a dpa video interview.

“I know when you give speeches like this that you find yourself in a kind of tunnel, like every artist before and after the performance. The external perception is somewhat limited and in this respect I understand,” said the SPD Chairman.

At the same time, Esken criticized the great media attention on the scene. “The fact that the media is making such a big deal out of it and (…) it is also being abused in a way on social media shows the level at which our debate is taking place.”

A short video recorded after the vote on the vote of confidence sparked discussions on social media on Monday. It shows the Chancellor talking to SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich. Esken comes over, Scholz looks at her briefly – then turns away without comment and leaves Esken standing there. Esken spreads her hands out questioningly – as if she wanted to say: What was that all about?

Scholz reacted to this very quickly on the

Esken assured that she saw no fundamental problem between herself and Scholz. “I have been working very, very closely and very trustingly with Olaf Scholz for five years. And I have no reason to assume that he treats me differently than he treats others.”
