For a long time there was no movement in the negotiations on an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza. Now a breakthrough could be on the horizon.
According to Egyptian security circles, the difficult negotiations on an agreement for a ceasefire in the Gaza war are in their final phase. A deal that would also lead to the release of Israeli hostages from the coastal area could be reached within ten days, it said. There has been progress on all outstanding issues.
An Egyptian delegation set off from Qatar’s capital Doha this morning to meet representatives from Israel and the USA for the negotiations. The USA, Egypt and Qatar mediate between Israel and Hamas, which do not negotiate directly with each other. The aim is a ceasefire and the release of the hostages still held in the Gaza Strip.
The round of talks in Doha is now about the role of international institutions that are supposed to monitor the implementation of the desired agreement, security circles said.
A ceasefire should initially last 60 days, with Israeli soldiers remaining stationed in some areas of the Gaza Strip. The hostages kidnapped from Israel will be released gradually, it said.
Israeli media had previously reported that, among other things, it was still to be clarified which Palestinian prisoners would be released from Israeli prisons in return for the hostages kidnapped from Israel. According to Israeli reports, some of those affected who have committed serious crimes are being accommodated in countries such as Turkey or Qatar.
