Scholz after Trump phone call: The killing must end

For the second time after Trump’s election victory, Chancellor Scholz spoke on the phone with the future US President. He then appears confident about a central topic.

After his telephone conversation with future US President Donald Trump, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) expressed his confidence that Europe and the US will continue their support for Ukraine together. “But of course with a clear perspective that there is a fair peace for Ukraine, which can defend its sovereignty, and that the killing ends,” Scholz added at a press conference after the EU summit in Brussels. “It’s very clear to me that we have to do everything we can to make this possible.”

Even with a President Trump, a coordinated Ukraine policy with the USA is needed. “My impression: That’s also quite possible.” It was the Chancellor’s second conversation with Trump since his election victory on November 5th. Trump is scheduled to be sworn in in Washington on January 20th. It is not necessarily usual for Scholz to speak on the phone with the future president for the second time before taking office.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj also took part in the EU summit on Thursday. On Wednesday evening, Scholz and heads of state and government and foreign ministers from six other NATO states met with Zelensky and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte for a confidential discussion.
