An agreement must be reached by midnight on Friday, otherwise the USA faces a shutdown. In any case, Donald Trump speaks of a “success” in the dispute over the US budget.
The Republicans in the US Congress have presented a new draft to avert the impending budget freeze in the USA. US President-elect Donald Trump wrote on Thursday in his online service Truth Social of a “success in Washington”. “A very good agreement for the American people” has now been reached. As he requested, the new text stipulates that the national debt ceiling will remain suspended until January 2027.
Donald Trump teamed up with Elon Musk
Republicans and Democrats alike should now agree to this text, Trump wrote. He had previously rejected a cross-party agreement between Republicans and Democrats on an interim budget together with the high-tech billionaire Elon Musk, who he had appointed as government advisor. However, an agreement must be reached by midnight on Friday, otherwise the so-called shutdown will occur in the USA.
If there is no agreement before the deadline expires, the shutdown will send hundreds of thousands of state employees on unpaid compulsory leave. This would mean restrictions on government services, border control and numerous public facilities such as national parks and state museums over the Christmas holidays.
