In 1985, Bernhard Worms wanted to become Prime Minister and had to admit defeat to Johannes Rau. Years later he became State Secretary. Now the CDU politician has died.

Bernhard Worms is dead. The CDU politician and former State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Labor died at the age of 94. This was announced by the State Chancellery in Düsseldorf. North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) praised Worms as a passionate democrat.

Worms was a member of the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament for 20 years, at times as CDU parliamentary group leader. In 1985 he ran as the CDU’s top candidate against Johannes Rau (SPD) in the state elections and lost. In 1991 he became State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Labor under Minister Norbert Blüm and Chancellor Helmut Kohl (both CDU).

Bernhard Worms remained committed until old age

In March 2007 he received the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. Until last year, Worms was active on the board of trustees of the Heinz Kühn Foundation. “Bernhard Worms was my friend for many decades. I will not forget him,” said former Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers (CDU).

Worms comes from Pulheim near Cologne, where he lived until the end. He was an honorary citizen of the city.
