Itamar Ben-Gvir prayed on the Temple Mount and angered Muslims. Foreign Minister Baerbock had also already warned Israel’s government.
Israel’s right-wing extremist Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has once again provoked people with a prayer on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. “I went to our shrine to pray for our soldiers, for the rapid return of all hostages and total victory with God’s help,” Ben-Gvir wrote in a post on Platform X.
The Temple Mount (Al-Haram al-Sharif) with the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site in Islam. For Jews, the Temple Mount with the Wailing Wall is the holiest site because two Jewish temples used to stand there. The Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City is under Muslim administration, while Israel is responsible for security.
Israel: Repeated violations at the Temple Mount
According to an agreement with the Muslim authorities, Jews are allowed to visit the facility but are not allowed to pray there. However, there are always violations.
As with Ben-Gvir’s previous provocations, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the status quo on the Temple Mount had not changed. However, the police minister’s violations of the rules never have consequences.
