Putin signed the law on life imprisonment for recidivist pedophiles

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, January 28, signed a law on life imprisonment for recidivist pedophiles. The document is posted on the official Internet portal of legal information.

The maximum sentence of life imprisonment will be extended to similar repeated crimes against minors under 18 years of age. Previously, the restriction provided for punishment for the commission of such a crime against persons under 14 years of age.

In addition, the use of life imprisonment will be expanded in cases where a crime has been committed against two or more minors. In this case, we are also talking about cases where the specified crime is associated with the commission of another grave or especially grave crime.

The bill was submitted to the State Duma by the United Russia party and the first vice speaker of the Federation Council (SF), secretary of the general council of the political force Andrei Turchak on September 10, 2021. On January 18, the State Duma adopted this law, and on January 26, the Federation Council approved it.

As Maria Spiridonova, a member of the Association of Russian Lawyers, stated in an interview with Izvestia, the proposed bill will be positively received by society. According to her, reports of sexual crimes against minors give rise to heated discussions about the need to apply extraordinary measures of criminal law to criminals.

Chairman of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin noted that tough measures are necessary due to the widespread recidivism among those previously convicted of pedophilia, Gazeta.Ru writes.
